1. Assessing the Legacy Blog Structure
1.1. The Problem with Outdated Posts
Over the years my writing on amarvyas.in spread across many topics — technology, imaging, web hosting and experiments that no longer match my author brand. This post explains the plan: build a fresh, lightweight archive to hold legacy and off-topic posts so the main site can focus on five core areas.
- Problem: outdated posts, broken images, theme leftovers and database clutter.
- Goal: refocus the main site and preserve older content in a clean, low-cost archive.
1.2. Evolution of Blog Categories
I wrote across multiple categories: technology experiments, photo/imaging notes, web hosting how-tos, and occasional essays that were useful at the time. Over time many posts became outdated or were left with dangling CSS/classes from removed themes, missing images, broken links, and database entries that should have been cleaned. Instead of spending heavy effort to refactor each legacy post for SEO correctness, I decided to centralize legacy content in an archive and keep the main author site tightly focused.
1.3. The Challenge With setting up an archive site
arc.amarvyas.in already holds many older posts, but cleaning it up properly is a heavy lift. Issues include legacy theme classes and markup leftover in content, missing images, broken internal links, and database residue like unused options and orphaned meta keys. Given limited time and the desire to keep my main site polished, a rebuild felt more practical than incremental repairs.
2. A Lightweight Archive Solution
2.1. New Site Features and Strategy
The new site will be a fresh, lightweight ClassicPress installation with a minimal theme (McLuhan or similar). Its primary functions include acting as a consolidated repository for legacy content, importing posts from various sources, and keeping the footprint small by retaining only featured images while serving other media via CDN. It uses a simple taxonomy to let readers browse by source or topic.
2.2. Lightweight Archive Site: ClassicPress and Frugal VPS
I chose a specific target environment to ensure longevity and performance. The platform is ClassicPress for stability and a minimal plugin surface. The design utilizes a McLuhan-like lightweight theme. Hosting will be on a frugal VPS (2 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, ~25 GB storage) tuned for low memory usage. The media strategy is strict: only keep featured images on the archive; serve other images via a CDN like Gumlet.
2.3. Migration, Main Site Focus, and Timeline
The main author site will now focus on five tightly defined topics: Writing, Sustainability, Travel, Books, and Podcasts. To support clarity, the legacy content migration follows a phase-based approach: staging, importing batches (Blogger, Medium, LinkedIn), basic cleanup of broken tags, and verification.
Timeline: Target: 2 months. Optional 1 month buffer. Goal completion: end of July 2026.
